Germany to Legalize Cannabis

Campaigners hail the law shift which comes into force on 1 April - though police are less thrilled.

Berlin - Germany is set to legalize cannabis from 1 April, a move that has been hailed by campaigners but met with some concern from police.

The new law will allow adults to possess and consume up to 30 grams of cannabis, and to cultivate up to three plants at home. The sale of cannabis will also be legalized, but only through licensed dispensaries.

Campaigners have welcomed the law change, saying it will end the prohibition of a substance that is widely used and has been shown to have medicinal benefits. They also argue that it will reduce the black market and free up police resources to focus on other crimes.

However, police have expressed concerns about the potential impact of legalization on public safety. They say that it could lead to an increase in drug-related crime and traffic accidents.

The government has said that it will monitor the impact of legalization and make changes to the law if necessary.
